The Increasing Importance Of Technology Law In Our Daily Lives

As our lives continue to be transformed by innovative technology and the ever-expanding internet, technology law is becomingly an increasingly important legal discipline. While technology law is grounded in the same principles as other fields of jurisprudence, it is also evolving at a rapid rate. While we may not be living like the Jetsons just yet, we have seen the way we do business, communicate with others, and manage our private matters, change drastically in fascinating and unpredictable ways, often in surprisingly short periods of time. A technology attorney can guide his or her clients through existing technology law while also helping craft case law that will help us navigate the future. While virtually any aspect of the legal system has a technology law counterpart, there are three predominant fields that seem particularly relevant to information technology’s impact on our lives.

1.Intellectual property law. Intellectual property law affects anyone who is involved in the act of creation, and while technology and the internet have in many ways been a huge boon to inventors, artists, and businesses, they have also complicated matters. Protecting your intellectual property can be as simple as registering your copyright, patent, or trademark with your government’s agency or as complicated as a protracted and contentious legal battle. If you feel you have creatively expressed an idea, usually through artistic pursuits, invented something remarkable, or designed a trademark that distinguishes you from your competitors, you should at the very least read up on intellectual property law or, even better, consult an intellectual property attorney, particularly if you are launching a startup company.

2.Privacy law. Now more than ever it is easier for someone not only to invade your privacy but also to make what they learn become public to a massive audience. Whether you are concerned about identity theft, businesses selling your information to other businesses, or your most personal information becoming private, all of our interests meet at the intersection of technology and privacy law. It is unlikely you will need to engage the services of a privacy lawyer as a private citizen unless you feel your privacy rights have been violated or someone accuses you of violating theirs. If you are a business owner, on the other hand, you will be concerned with protecting the confidential information of your company, those you do business with, and your employees. Privacy policies and practices should be established with the help of a lawyer who understands corporate and technology law.

3.Media law. It is safe to say that media, entertainment, and technology influence our personal and professional lives on a daily basis. Whether you are using a social networking site, downloading music, or sending someone an email, there could be legal ramifications to your actions. That is by no means intended to scare anyone away from regularly using this vital technology, but it is important to acknowledge that these are new and unchartered territories, and we have yet to fully understand how these will affect us in the future. As a private individual, just be smart about how you conduct yourself online. In your professional life, however, depending on your career, you may need to retain a media law attorney to protect your present and future interests. Hopefully, any media law issues you must contend with will merely be transactional in nature. If you do, however, face litigation, having worked with a technology law attorney will only help you in the end.
